Bulls Island by Dorothea Benton Frank

Betts and JD were childhood sweethearts and both from old southern families in Charleston .  Once they announce their engagement—tragedy strikes, lives are changed, the engagement is broken and Betts runs away to New York .  Twenty years later, Betts returns to Charleston under duress.  Her job as a top investment bank executive leads her back to Charleston to work with JD on a development project on Bulls Island . She hasn’t returned to Charleston or seen JD since she left.  Betts is estranged from her family.  Emotions run high—Betts will struggle with revealing a secret that could threaten everything that is important to her. A Gentle Rain by Deborah Smith

gentle-rain.jpgI like Deborah Smith’s books.  She writes sweet stories that make you feel good but she fills with complex characters and interesting plots.  Her latest books is no exception.  Ben has been the sole provider for his down syndrome brother since his parents died when he was sixteen.  Now an owner of a ranch in Florida, he employs the “unemployable”.  His employees are autistic and mentally challenged individuals with big hearts and plenty of spirit.  Kara, searching for a purpose in her life,  happens upon the ranch and stays.  Not a big story, there’s an illness, a romance, a conflict, all the ordinary ingredients of a book of this type but the book will make you think and should lighten your heart, if only for a little while.

Rules of Gentiltiy by Janet Mullany

Philomena Wellesley Clegg loves to speak her mind on two topics men and bonnets. On the former she has yet to meet a man she is willing to marry, until Indigo comes along. He causes her to question her very strong opionions on men and bonnets. Is he the man that will finally get her to marry? This laugh out loud funny book is a cross between Bridget Jone’s Diary and Pride and Prejudice and will have you contemplating your own fashion issues.

Mary Balogh

balogh-prequel.gifbalogh-1.jpgbalogh-2.gifbalogh-3.gifbalogh-4.gifbalogh-5.gifbalogh-6.gifI stumbled onto a new romance author while looking for a quick read.  In Mary Balogh’s Bedwyn family series, each book tells the story of one of the Bedwyn silblings.  All fiercely independent and dynamic, they find love and happiness in their own unique way.  Their oldest brother, the Duke of Bewcastle, rules the family with an iron fist, but also with a protective love.  He doesn’t always agree with his brothers and sisters in their choice of mate, but he stands by them all.  Although there is nothing new here as far as storyline or happy endings, something about Balogh’s writing style and characters make these a “can’t put down” read.

Bidding for Love by Katie Fforde

bidding.jpgKatie Fforde writes chick lit.  Her books are filled with quirky characters who usually find themselves in a new situation and have to find a way to cope.  Usually they find love along the way but it’s never the mission of the main character.  Humor is always a part of her books and the read is easy to enjoy.

In her latest book, Flora Stanza has inherited half of an auction business - Stanza & Stanza from an elderly uncle.  Well not half, really 51%.  Flora is a party girl from London who knows nothing about antiques and auctions,  but she seizes this new opportunity that presents itself and heads out to the country to meet her new “partner”,  her very distant cousin Charles who has been running the business for many years.    Charles is less than thrilled to see her, hoping she’ll go away immediately but Flora stays, makes friends and learns enough to make some much needed changes to the failing business.    Love of course finds her along the way and everything ends happily ever after.  This the kind of book you should take on vacation, nothing is required of you but to relax and read.

Natural Born Charmer by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

charmer.gifA light and frothy romance set in East Tennessee, Susan Elizabeth Phillips once more draws on football for her leading character.   Dean is a star quarterback known almost as much for his underwear ads as he is for his prowess on the football field and Blue Bailey, a portrait artist with a inclination to wander.  They meet in Colorado as Dean is driving to his vacation home in Tennessee.  At loose ends, Blue decides to go with him and stays because she feels Dean needs her.  Dean and Blue were raised by very different women, one a groupie that was addicted to drugs and alcohol and the other a political activist who spent her time fighting the government both in this country and others, but the result was the same for both.  Raised by a series of strangers they both have “relationship issues” to deal with before they can live happily ever after.   Books by this author are often funny and this one is no exception, both the situations and the characters in the book are fun and funny with a bit of serious thrown in.   If you like romances, you should definitely try this book.

Last Bite by Nancy Verde Barr

last-bite.gifIn Last Bite, Casey Costello is an executive chef for an early morning television show in New York.  She doesn’t cook on tv but she prepares all the food for the on-air chef.  The book has a lot of detail about how she gets the food ready, how she has to break down the recipe and do all the different steps so that an entire recipe could be shown in 3 minutes.  Casey mostly works with Sally, America’s favorite chef but there are also guest chefs, most notably the handsome and charming Danny O’Shea.  Casey has a large, passionate Italian family and a job she loves, add to that a trip to Italy, a broken love affair, a small mystery and a new romance and you have a very enjoyable book.  The author worked with Julia Child for almost 20 years so she has a great deal of experience to draw from.  The book is light and easy to read with enjoyable characters that will hopefully show up again in a future book.
