Up Close and Dangerous by Linda Howard

up-close.gifI was on a trip Labor Day weekend and settled myself in my seat on a fairly small airplane and opened the latest book by Linda Howard, only to find that I had chosen a book about a plane crash to keep me company on my trip home!

The owner of a transport company and his richest, snobbiest (he thought) customer were flying from Seattle to Colorado when the engines stopped and they went down in the mountains of Idaho.  They both survived but were hurt and sick and had no food and no way to communicate with the outside world.  The temperature was freezing and with layers of clothing from Bailey’s suitcase and anything she could use from the plane she keeps herself and Cam - the plane’s pilot - alive.   The story goes back and forth between the survivors and the people they left behind and everyone, including the reader is left to wonder who sabotaged the plane and almost killed Cam and Bailey.  As with any good romantic suspense book, the loose ends are resolved by the last page and the ending should satisfy anyone reading this book.

High Noon by Nora Roberts

high-noon.gifPhoebe MacNamara is a police lieutenant in Savannah, Georgia and works as a hostage negotiator.  She is also the glue that holds her family together.  Her mother has not stepped out of the house in years and she is trying to raise her young daughter and work too.  Phoebe found her calling at an early age when her mothers violent boyfriend held her family hostage.  She enjoys her job and is way too busy to start a relationship with Duncan Swift.  Then as if life weren’t busy enough, someone has targeted her and her loved ones leaving threatening messages on her doorstep.  In this case she is not the negoiator but feels more like the hostage.  This story starts from page one and doesn’t slow down till the very end.

Double Take by Catherine Coulter

double-take.gifIf you love FBI thrillers with a little romance thrown into the mix you’ll enjoy this book.  Julia Ransom has long been suspected of murdering her much older husband but the police have never been able to get any evidence or proof to arrest her.  When suddenly there are attempts on her life, the local police and FBI begin to realize that the real murderer is still out there and must be afraid that Julia could identify him or her.  Without the help and protection of Special Agent Cheney Stone, Julia’s life would be in even more danger.  The author also brings in another story line parallel with Julia and Cheney.  She brings in characters from her previous novel and continues to tell the story of Sheriff Dixon Noble who was last seen in Point Blank.  The two storylines weave together very well and you can’t wait until the last page to see how she wraps it up.

Conspiracy Game by Christine Feehan

conspiracy.gifThis book has many of what I think of as Ms. Feehan’s “distinguishing” elements. Jack Norton is an alpha male, a powerful, confident control freak who’s genetically programmed to respond to one specific female. Briony Jenkins is a strong, independent woman who’s uncomfortable both with his domination and the sense that their attraction to each other is pre-ordained. Their emotional and sexual connection is strong and intense. Christine Feehan at her best does this very, very, very well, and this book has it in spades. I enjoyed Jack and Briony’s romance very much.

Considerably less involving are the lengthy voids disguised as conversations. Some contain background information, however, in one bizarre instance the reader is treated to a six page description how Dr. Whitney gained access to the GhostWalker’s computer system to spy on them.

All in all I think this book will likely please Christine Feehan’s fans, and would also be an okay place to start for those interested in trying the series, GhostWalkers. Other books in this series include Shadow Game, Mind Game, and Night Game.
